Statement intent
What is my chosen theme?
My chosen theme for my GCSE main project is going to be around Landscape and I am going to look at different types of landscapes EG lakes trees miniature landscapes urban landscape and possibly even my ow local landscape. I have chosen to do this theme because it gives me a different types of creative ideas around my surrounding allowing which will allow me to do different techniques for my project.
What is the initial research for this theme?
In order to produce this successful final project, I need to start by doing some in depth research around my chosen topic. They way i am going to do this: Researching different photographers and see how they did that work hoping it would inspire me to create my project.Looking at different videos if they used Photoshop or not in order to show the different from the original picture or not. Create mood boards to give you ideas on how your going to start it of or what picture you need to do it on.I hoped to explore different type of options so that I build up my understanding of the chosen theme hoping it is well informed and depth. This will allow me to create a successful project and will help to inspire me. My main aim is to create a project that is personal to me and where I can explore my photography development. I am going to write up my work on Weebly website so I can see where I am going with my work and see where my ideas ends at.
What photoshoots do you intend to complete during the project to help me with a theme?
I intend to capture wide range of different shoots. In year 10 we went to the Lake District and focused on capturing the natural landscapes, focusing on: autumn colors and soft lights, Studio shots (bark ,moss, lichen ), Going to my local area and documenting the landscapes around me, Photoshop landscapes and Miniature landscape. I could use my own portrait techniques to combine it with my landscapes to create my own imaginary world. I might take my work on a journey and create collage landscapes.
Which artists and photographers am I going to research?
Idris Khan- cultural landscape of literature, history, art, music and religion to create densely layered imagery that is both abstract and figurative and experience collapse of time into single moments.
Stephanie Jung-capture a special moments like getting lost in time.
Alessio Trerotoli-abstract pictures of urban landscapes and contemporary life by juxtaposing different images and show as a usual image
Berenice Abbott-portraits of architecture, urban design from 1930s, science interpretation from 1940s to 1960s.
Aaron Siskind-abstract photos
Michael Kenna-unusual black & white landscapes
Nicolas Gooden- professional urban photographer
Richard Estes-reflective, clean, and inanimate city and geometric landscapes
Alexandros Maragos- night photographer
Galen Rowell- wild nature photographer
Eliot Porter- intimate color photographer of nature
Art Wolfe- color images of landscapes, wildlife, and native cultures
What techniques with the camera and photoshop am I going to use for my theme?
Throughout this project I intend to use many different process and techniques as possible to gain a better quality project. When I am using my camera I will leave it on the manual setting so that i can control the images I am taking. If I am taking photos outside, I will have to constantly check my ISO, white balance, shutter speed and aperture because the light is going to change all the time. I hope that when I am using photoshop i can use varieties of tools: Layers, Opacity brush, dodge & burn, Saturation, Sharpener, Blur tool and Spot healing tool. I could use a mobile phone apps to extend my knowledge further and manipulate images using Snap seed and Lens flare to edit the work.
What do I hope to learn more about in the project?
By doing this project I hope to learn more about the themes of Landscape but also how to take my work on a journey to create a really personal project. In order to do this I am going to watch tutorials videos and experimenting using with photos creating images to with different tools.
What do you see as your final project of gallery?
For my final set of images, I think I would like to do a mix of portraits and landscapes images using abstracts or patterns focusing more on the darker side of the photos so we can understand and feel image as we do it.

Mind Map for my project

Martin Lawrence Research
Context- https://www.martinlawrencephotography.com/
“Martin is one of the UK's leading photographers specializing in landscape photography and wildlife images of the English Lake District and Scotland. He has worked as a professional photographer since 2005 and is well known for his images and articles, which appear widely both on-line and in books, magazines, calendars and the UK photography press.”
Composition
When I look at this picture of the Lake District from Martin Lawrence, he uses the ‘Rule of Thirds’, by showing that on the bottom two thirds is the lake, as well as the trees, and on the top third is the mountains This composition has a strong impact as the water becomes the main element with the pebbles framing the shot and the mountains look along way away in the distance. In my opinion I think Martin used strong leading lines to help create a strong composition. I think all the lines lead to the shoreline of the picture, where you see a reflection of the trees and house in the middle of the picture. This creates a ‘sweet spot’ and draws the viewer's eye to this part of the photograph.
I think that Martin captured a perfect picture of the reflection on a still day. The reflection is a mirror landscape of the picture. I think it makes it
look more like an abstract pattern as he can capture the reflections in a different symmetrical shape. When I look at this image, I think they took this photo during dawn or midday. As you can see they used a bit of sunrise during the ‘golden hour’. I think the colour is quite soft as the light is slowly started to rise up at a mid pace but also a bit but dark which creates an elegant contrast. I think the image is more like in the early autumn or late summer as the trees are still green and there is bits by bits of fresh grass on the peak of the hillside.
Vanishing point is the small white house. In my opinion I think the photographer probably used a telescopic lens as everything is in Sharp focus with a deep depth of field (F36). I think the photographer used a sharp focus lens in order to capture a good clear image of the house and the mountains, possibly using a tripod to ensure there was no movement so the image stays sharp. I think the photographer took the picture at an eye level for example standing in the water crouching on the side of the lake. This makes the viewer feel like they are almost in the image, standing next to the photographer. In this image there is a foreground is the water, middle ground is the white house of the picture distance is the mountains. The white stands out as the color is showing more contrast on the soft image. The trees in the frame of the image are directed in the right hand side and show a strong composition as in the ⅓ of the picture and it helps balance the picture as well as showing a natural type area.
Content
In the picture there is a white house which is presented in the middle of the image and in front is a wide see through lake all with the reflection of the tree which is stood in a straight position on the right side corner as well as a mountain on the background.
Connection
I like this image as the background is presented in a calm and quiet area and it seems like a good area to stay away from the loud disturbance that may be going through your head. Also nature is more like my favorite area to be surrounded by. This can inspire me to take more pictures as nature is such a beautiful area to visit as your surrounded by natural area of life and the images I could try and take are like the mountains, trees and lake also plant.

Paul Mitchell Research
Context
"Paul has also been successful in the prestigious Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, winning the Sunday Times Choice Award in 2013, the Urban Category winner in 2015 and commended in 2017 and 2018. He has also had successes in the Outdoor Photographer of the Year and the International Garden Photographer of the Year."
Composition
Paul might have captured this photo from a nearby distanced but in front of the urban town as you can see lots of thick covering the whole area of the town and small old fashioned box houses in the countryside separated from the busy city which seems very noisy and polluted as there are factories with thick black smoke shooting out causing the clouds to change from clean white to black thunderclouds. They have strong leading lines from the houses in the countryside to the city and the factories to the sky. This shows an effect that they are trying to show the difference of how the world could be a better living by seeing how clean the countryside is compare to the city as well as showing us that its much peaceful being in a calm area as well. I think the photographer used Rule of Thirds from showing 1/3 of the picture to the left is showing the sky as well as a power cutline and the thick grass and the 1/3 of the picture in the middle 2 factories polluting the air with dangerous carbon dioxide as well as the small contained houses and thick grass and the other 1/3 of the grass is the silent buildings as well as some houses and thick grass. They have many sweet spots for example the factories with dangerous carbon dioxide shooting out and the small contained houses and the thick grass. This shows an impact as he is trying to show how he is living in a area which seems to be a calm dangerous area maybe and how people rather live in the big world surrounded by people who are judgy and is always working hard day and night to earn money for the family and excetera. In my opinion i think the photographer used a tripod ti takes the pictures as they seem focused and he is only showing the sky houses and the natural enviroment as well as using the filters daylight to capture the sky and the change of contrast in colours from white to black.
Connection
what I like about this picture is that it can show the difference between the area like the people who lives in the small contained houses and the bigger city for example that those who stay in the small houses might be in poverty and finds it hard to earn money or look for jobs and the people who are working could be living in big houses would not be facing poverty at all. When you look at this picture you don't know how you would feel caused on one house you can see small houses surrounded by grass but on the other hand factories which could be surrounded by disease or illness due to bad area of working caused of the weather. I think they used Photoshop to filter it in a black and white cover to make us feel more depressed by staring at the consequences of the area. What I don't like about this photo is that it shows too much grass and if no one cuts it out it will be like they are abandoned and no live there.
Inspiration
I think I can achieve this image as my project as a whole is black and white. This photo inspires me to go out into the real world and take a variety of nature areas such as the gardens or the parks or go to an actual countryside and grab pictures as I want my outcomes to become like the one above.

Mock exam-Daniyal Coyle
Context https://www.flickr.com/photos/danielcoyle/40254303950/
"I got up extremely early one morning, and headed out to Derwentwater, to see the sun rise over Borrowdale. Being there for the dawn chorus
was an awesome experience, I'll definitely have to return soon."
Composition
Danial Coyle took a picture from the middle of the ground in his first picture “Dreamy Sunrise”. This picture may been taken from the beach or the coast as there is a bridge shown in the middle of the picture. They have strong leading lines from the sunrise behind the clouds to the coast bridge. This shows an impact that the photographer loves taking pictures when its in broad daylight, but not during the full day but at night when the light starts to appear in the sky. I think the photographer has used rule of thirds where it shows the coast bridge in the middle section of the photo, how it shows a reflection of maybe a tree on the left bottom side as well as a beautiful light being shined above the mountains which might be a sweet spot. The impact shows that they are focusing on the light in the sky as that shows different colors as it normally flows by time and the reflection on the bottom of the left side of the photo shows that it wasn't taken at a lake but at some coast or beach. The photographer took this picture at a eye level This shows an impact as they are trying to show us what is happening in front of their eyes but no where else like for example the surroundings or the people that maybe awake at sunrise. I think they used a F4 as they only showed like the mountains side and the sea other than that nothing else but they did focused the picture very well though. In my opinion they used an ISO at 800 as they don't want to over exposed the lighting of the picture and want to keep it at a perfect normal tone. In my opinion i think they have used the cloudy white balance where it shows the different type of colors, daylight as you can see the light shining through the clouds as well as the shade as the lighting isn’t too bright or too dark. I think the photographer did use a tripod as the picture seem to be really focused well also as there is no part being smudge or overlapping each other. I think they have use both light and dark colors; light above the mountains as well as in the middle of the ocean but dark on the sides of the oceans even the mountains. This shows an impact as the day hasn't even started yet but it started to begin though. I'm not quite sure but on each side of the lake it seems to be very symmetrical a bit. I believed the image has been cropped as it doesn't show a full side if the mountains on one side but its shows a drop on the other side of the mountains. The object in the photograph is the bridge and the reflection of a tree.
Connection
What I like about this image is that it was taken at a perfect timing at a very early time of day for example between 5-7am in a nature environment maybe in the season of early autumn or spring. When you look at this image it gives you a relaxing vibe as it just a wonderful view to wake up and to see that is the first thing that completely widens your eyes open. I think they needed to go to an area where it was peaceful and silent then the first area was the lakes as it surrounded by the clear water showing your reflection or Daniel Coyle. I think the strengths of this image is that they used exposure to show the reflection of the sky in the lake as well as the hidden object from behind the camera. I also think that they used ISO to change the lighting tone of the whole image to show which area needed to stay dark and which area needed to lighten up. A weakness is that they might have photoshop it a bit to show some of the waves on the bottom right side and to show texture from the bridge. This doesn’t link to my work as mine is going to be a manmade project of texture using layers from photoshop.
Inspiration
I don't it think I would achieve this type of image as this is more of a nature environment picture when mine would be in a dark man-made environment. For my outcomes I want mine to be taken in a place full of memories and regret as well as layering it with words to show my use of photoshop in order to achieve higher grades. This image inspire me to do it in a environment where I feel people would have remembered memories from a past time but couldn’t anymore as they have passed away so it would be taken in places like the trees or cemeteries as well as using objects and how this has brought back memories for you.

What is Landscape?
Landscape photography is the art of capturing pictures of nature and the outdoors as it demonstrate the photos connection to nature and capture the essence of the world around them.
The Boats
Best Worst
This is my best picture as I took a quick picture of the train moving at a fast pace as well as the smoke coming out of the train. The sky looks wonderful and but the picture looks a bit blurred.
|
This is my worst picture as I took it as random out of nowhere also it's not focused and but it seems ok.
|
The Lakes
Best Worst
This is my best picture as you can see the waves texture on the rough ground going in different directions.
|
This is my worst picture as I couldn't try to take a picture of the water flowing out of the pipe and you can see the splash of the water but I was trying to take a quick shot of the droplets.
|
The Trees
Best Worst
The Plants
Best Worse
The Sky
Best Worst
This my best photo as I took a astonishing picture of the sun as it has risen into the cloudy sky as its being covered by the clouds. This might be my best picture so far as I took a glimpse of the clouds flowing across the mountains.
|
This is my worst picture as I took it on a cloudy sky and the brightness was ok but I still could've use the exposure to brighten the light on the picture.

Final outcome
My journey work
This point last year we visited Coniston in the Lake District. In October the season was Autumn and the weather was foggy and cloudy. We took a variety of landscape projects which were being followed by a shoot schedule. We took different photos at different and specific times of the day using the natural light at different times of the day which shows an effect on our landscape photography. We took a variety of photographs of Landscapes at animals, trees, rivers, plants, lakes, hills, mountains, shops including photographs on the boat trip capturing the atmosphere of the lake in the fog, mist while on the wake. We also captured nature and the rural autumnal colors, including the variety of light. The trip enabled us to have a wide range of photographs to use for our Weebly and to play around with as well as developing on Photoshop to improve but we could have included photographs of people inhabiting the landscape.
As I’ve been researching, I've been looking at Martin Lawrence, a Landscape photographer who specializes in taking images in the Lake District. He would capture photos of nature either during the early Autumn time or in the summertime. I also been looking at other photographers like Car Clifton and Thomas Heaton. We chose these photographers because they use particular aspects of landscape but similar themes and focus on the work. Their use of colors and composition inspired our location shoots and then developing our images in Photoshop watching tutorials to enable us to modify and manipulate the images in the style of our chosen photographers. Using tools such as filters, lens flare and other various effects to develop our images further to help us create our photographs to be more meaningful and personal to us.
We were planning our photograph shoots at locations near us of urban and rural landscapes focusing upon the specific atmosphere we would like to create within our images. We can take pictures of the parks, streets, tram stops, bus shelters and the southern cemetery considering the atmosphere, location, weather and the light which was created including the framing of the objects with focus within the composition. We were possibly focusing upon a project on man made textures: whether that is inside studio shots or natural lighting of the locations. The equipment will reflect where we are doing the photo shoots and what camera settings for us to use as well as planning the time of day we could visit and planning specifically on the equipment we need to use: such as lens, tripods, lighting and lamps

Photopea
Black and white Imogen Cunningham
In this tutorial as I upload a photo on PhotoPea I clicked on Image then Adjustment to find the Black and White effect so I can use the colours agenda to switch up the colours so I can change the mode of the flower to see which part needed to be brighten up and which parts needed to go low. After that I clicked on Filter and clicked the word Render so I can find Lens Flare to add a spot of light on one corner to show how the flower is brightening up.
Layering
My next journey
In my project I have been experimenting my pictures on by using 2 different software for example Photopea and Photoshop. I've used a variety of tools and filters for example the Lens Flare, Layers, Colour Saturation and a bit of Adjustment to change the mood of the image and I did this to change and refine my photos to make it unrecognisable from its original picture. The more tutorials I watched and completed the more I know how to used the lens and see how my different outcomes will come out. The tool that I found interesting is the magic cut and lens flare because i can transfer the picture which I cut around and pasted it on a different image and also the lens flare as I can put a light in different angles to show how they are brightening up.
My final ideas
what I enjoyed so far is using Photoshop/Photopea is refining my pictures and making it different from its original self by using a variety of techniques for example using layers and lens flare or cutting different shapes but also using pictures from the internet. For my final photography gallery I am going to develop my images around Black & White using layers and to do this I am going to look at the following tutorials to help me produce outcomes.

Evaluation
Over the past year, we've been working on our Landscape project at the start of Year 10. We had the opportunity to visit Lake District last year during the autumn weather where we captured a variety of pictures for example the plants, the sky and the magnificent mountains as well as walking around a very long rounded lake as we went to the rural town to take lots more pictures of the old fashion buildings.
During this whole project, I have managed to develop my understandings on how to refine and develop my work by uploading my images onto Photoshop and Photopea and using different techniques with different tutorials. I learnt how to use layering as well colorizing my images from Color to Black & White. Using tools like those I was feeling confident and managed to gain some skills to to take use during the assessment. At first I was confused of what I was meant to do or what tutorials I can search up on YouTube to help me until I found a couple which gave me some inspiration to how I wanted my final galleries to look like. My overall project was based on Patterns as at first I was a bit confused on what fitted my work until I need to find what were my best strength during the work.
To get some extra more support and inspiration I decided to look at my big sister work as she managed to get higher grades and past photography as well as YouTube tutorials for extra more help. Doing this helped me improve a lot on my work. The problem which I found out was that due to covid19 Lockdown we must stay at home and complete our works, which distracted me a lot as I'm not used to doing work in my normal environment as I can wander off and forget what I was meant to do also as well as my mental health being in the way of completing all works as I got lots from my other subjects which was necessary to complete and as well as using Photoshop in school some people been using Photopea as we can complete some works at home as well which I think in my opinion was easier to use. I managed to overcome this problem by ordering what subject is more important to be done and what is the least important but needed to be completed with the help of Google Classroom To Do List and by doing some boxing to take care of my mental health. All together in my time during photography, I'm kind of proud of how far I came as I struggled a lot and had experience taking the photos but not much knowledge on Photoshop I am happy of where I am and prepared of what is next to come.
